Today, we will focus on a single task: writing a news article. Here is why:

  • You need to write news articles for your Macbeth assignment (which will take place over the next few days)
  • Writing a news article is a significant part of the OSSLT

You will write two articles today. Imagine that two of three images above are connected to these news stories.

The First Paragraph

  • Your first sentence needs to answer the who, what, when, where (and possibly how/why)
  • Your second sentence should elaborate on the first (usually, it addresses the how/why)
The Second Paragraph (one of the following)
  • make direct connections to the events in the picture (good prep for the OSSLT)
  • explain the story in more detail
  • explain  the series of events that led directly to the story

The Third Paragraph

  • “interview” someone connected to the story, and use a direct quotation from the interview. Focus on the person’s thoughts/feelings about the event. (Note: because reporters cannot add their own opinion, the use of quotations is the only way to bring opinion into your article)

The Fourth Paragraph (choose one of the following)

  • explain the series of events in the past that made this story possible
  • explain a connection to a previous events that are similar to this one. (example: “This is the third protest rally in Toronto this year. The first was…)

The Fifth Paragraph (choose one of the following)

  • explain the long-term consequences of this event
  • explain the next step in the process (example: Authorities in Toronto are meeting this week to discuss the increase in student protests).
