ENG 4U: The Imagery Throwdown

In our first and only battle to date, Confessional poet Sylvia Plath went down swinging.  Today, some of our remaining poets will wage a war of images.

The Ground Rules

You and your partner will have fifteen minutes to do the following:

  • read the poem.
  • use the poetry handout to learn as much as you can about the poem. You may also consult your texts.
  • identify the most meaningful image in the poem. The image can be vivid or subtle, explicit or implicit, contained by a single line or extended throughout the entire poem. Regardless, be prepared to explain what makes the image successful.

When the fifteen minutes are up, you and your partner will square off against your opponent. Come out swinging.
